 CHOOSING A DESIGNER
  •  CONTACT
Make sure the website designer being considered can be contacted by phone and email. Take notice of how long it takes for them to reply. If it takes too long time, then this may be an indication of what future contact with them will be like. Are they helpful, professional, polite and friendly? Be wary of designers who do not clarify where the work and the hours they keep.
  •  SERVICES OFFERED
Professional designers will offer whatever help you need, and NOT offer services in a 'package' only. Assistance in registering your website address (www.yourcompany.com), design, hosting, email address support and other services would be offered separately if that's what you require.
  •  EXPERIENCE
How long has the person or business been designing web sites? It may go without saying, but little experience usually equals little quality and service to you. They should have a portfolio page on their own website. Does their work communicate to you that they listen to their clients? Do you find their work easy to view and use? Do all links work? Do the sites load fast? Do all the pages on an individual site have a consistent look?
  •  TESTIMONIALS
This will give you a good idea of the service and design you can expect. Testimonies should have the email address or the web site address listed and linked (so you can contact them). Beware of fake testimonials in which just a name is listed but no email or site is accessible.
  •  FREE CONSULTATION
Contact the designer for a free consultation before you set up a contract. Most web designers will give you a free consultation if they want your business.

  •  CONTRACT
Make sure you have a contract drawn up before you make any payments. It should state clearly what is included in the contract e.g. how many pages, links, graphics? Does it include marketing and maintenance of your web site? If not, then ask what does it cost for the extras. This can include domain name registration, scanning and optimization of graphics and hosting. Does it include submitting your site to the main search engines individually? Don't be misled by those that say your site will be submitted to 3000 search engines by automatic submission software.
  •  PRICING AND PAYMENT
Surf around the Web to compare prices. You can expect to pay half of the full price up front. Electronic payments for website work (debit, credit card, Paypal, etc.) are common payment options for reputable companies.
  •  TESTING
Will designer test your site online before it's completed? Will it look good on many computers (Windows, Apple, Linux) and in many browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, Safari)? What screen resolutions can it be viewed correctly in? These issues will ensure your site will make a great impression on as many visitors as possible.
  •  OWNERSHIP AND CONFIDENTIALITY
The designer should it make very clear in writing that they accept you will retain ownership to EVERYTHING in and about the website upon complete payment for services. This includes securing your address (www.yourcompany.com), and the creation of all text and graphics. And, most importantly, that they will sign a confidentiality agreement when requested.
  •  ONGOING SUPPORT
Can the designer grow with your web site? You will want to make additions or changes to your site in the future especially if your business is expanding. Does your designer have other ideas for driving traffic to your site (since this is the lifeblood of a successful web site)?
